Cherry wood is highly sought after in Japan for its fine bark with its natural, delicate and infinitely varied patterns.
Cherry bark is stripped from the trees after the rainy season, to a height of at least ten metres, in the region near Kakunodate in Japan. The bark is left to dry for a year, then is carefully hand polished using the blade of a knife. Each craftsman has his own knives, using different ones according to the object being made. The natural patterns of the wood and the hand crafting makes each piece unique.
