Darjeeling Castleton DJ 117 “Clonal”
Origin: India, Darjeeling
Tea Estate: Castleton
Grade: F.T.G.F.O.P.1
Dry leaves:
Aspect: large, barely-rolled leaves, with more of a twisted appearance, and plenty of downy buds.
Colour:a fine looking tea with a mixture of brown, rust and khaki.
Scents: a lovely aromatic bouquet of fruity, zesty, woody and vanilla notes with hints of honey.
Brewed leaves:
Scents: geranium to start, with rose-floral notes, sweet hints of vanilla and fruit (cooked fruit, yellow fruit) topped with a fresh and heady accent of camphor and herbs.
Liquor:
Colour: a clear, gleaming liquor with a beautiful coppery colour.
Texture: a supple, smooth texture to start, following by a lovely lingering astringency that gives this tea a good, long-lasting presence.
Flavours: sweet and slightly acidic.
Aromas: very round, rich notes. A pronounced rose-floral attack with hints of geranium, a rich fruity bouquet (yellow fruit, white fruit), sweet vanilla, hints of wood and honey (pale honey), lychee, mango, grape and lingering herbal, woody notes.
Aromatic profile and length in the mouth: a lovely length with a very harmonious profile: a seamless succession of notes with plenty of elegance. The sweet, rich notes are combined with livelier flavours which makes this a very well-balanced tea.
Our verdict:
This tea is typical of the clonal varieties, being sweet, intense and highly aromatic. A truly magnificent plucking with floral, fruity (yellow fruit), honey, vanilla and woody notes that succeed one another seamlessly and harmoniously. Very accessible with its supple texture and sweet-flavoured attack, this second flush is a pure delight that should not be missed!

Throughout the year, our experts travel in the tea plantations looking for the best pluckings and new, rare, delicious teas.
The fact that we travel so extensively, that we taste and buy on location has many advantages and allows us to find rare crops by looking outside the traditional supplier circuit, to taste and to share with you the harvests of small plantations, which are often hidden away.
Visiting tea estates regularly and thereby establishing long-lasting relations with our suppliers allows us to guarantee regular quality control of the teas we buy, and to continue our mission: to bring you the best quality teas and to share our travels and experience with you, while concerning ourselves with environmental issues, working conditions on the estates and the fair trade practices to which we adhere.
