Our verdict:
There is a cluster of five villages in the district of Kurseong in Darjeeling (West Bengal): Jabarhat, Kotidhara, Pailadhora, Tukriya and Rohini. The latter originally had more than 1,400 hectares of tea plants and was considered the biggest garden in Darjeeling before the Indochina War. However, the creation of a military camp, Khaprail, led to almost 80% of the plants being pulled up. The garden was closed for a long period of 32 years (1962 to 1994), then reopened, with around 100 hectares being planted over the first two years. Since then the garden continues to be cultivated, tea shrubs are regularly planted in small lots, and the ground is being consolidated. Nearly 100,000 plants are added every year.
This tea was harvested on 10 November 2011 on Rohini Pahar mountain at altitudes of 335 to 1,372 metres. It is an autumn plucking with fruity, woody and honey notes and an astringent texture which gives the tea plenty of character as well as a lovely length in the mouth. This has the richness and aromatic intensity of the AV2 clonal varieties.

Throughout the year, our experts travel in the tea plantations looking for the best pluckings and new, rare, delicious teas.
The fact that we travel so extensively, that we taste and buy on location has many advantages and allows us to find rare crops by looking outside the traditional supplier circuit, to taste and to share with you the harvests of small plantations, which are often hidden away.
Visiting tea estates regularly and thereby establishing long-lasting relations with our suppliers allows us to guarantee regular quality control of the teas we buy, and to continue our mission: to bring you the best quality teas and to share our travels and experience with you, while concerning ourselves with environmental issues, working conditions on the estates and the fair trade practices to which we adhere.
