Description

This Grand Cru is from a land that is not typically known for its tea: Indonesia. While this country is famous for its rice and coffee, its teas are by contrast little known. Yet, thanks to its high mountains, mineral-rich volcanic soil, exceptional biodiversity and tropical climate, this archipelago provides the ideal conditions for growing tea plants. A wide variety of Camellia Sinensis and Assamica can be found here, as well as many ancient tea plant varieties that grow along the heights of the islands.
The history of tea in Indonesia is marked by the strong influence of China and Taiwan, which is why all tea colours can be found in the country today. Although, far from limiting themselves to reproducing Chinese teas, tea growers here stand out from the crowd by breaking the traditional rules and developing their own identity. However, it is not easy to come across these fine teas that have been hidden away in the mountains. They are rare, and above all intended for the local market. We travelled in search of passionate, creative growers producing exceptional but very small batches. Indonesian teas have a high aromatic diversity and are a real novelty.
A Grand Cru harvested in Cisujen, in western Indonesia. This white tea is made using the same technique as Chinese teas: after the harvest, the leaves are withered and dried for four days. The fine harvest consists of large leaves and delightful buds.
A round, gourmet Grand Cru with a smooth texture and mild, sweet flavour. It has fruity and floral aromatic notes of vanilla and honey.
